Whirlwind tour in New Jersey, New York and Las Vegas

March 12th, 2011

What a crazy, exciting week. First I was in Short Hills, New Jersey, with the wonderful women of Temple Bnai Jeshrun, then I went to Las Vegas for Tribefest, where I was on a panel with writer Josh Braff (author of Peep Show)–we had a great time sharing ideas during our session. Then back to New York for the National Jewish Book Awards where I received my award for Debut Fiction. What a thrill to hear Cythnia Ozick and meet the remarkable Israeli author David Grossman. Thanks to all the friends who came out to see me. Finally, the whirlwind was topped off with an elegant cocktail party in Manhattan, thrown in my  honor by the Foundation for Jewish Culture.  I met filmmakers, composers, writers, all helped by the foundation’s grants, along with so many supporters and board members who, along with their tireless staff, do so much to support Jewish culture and the arts. I am honored to be part of this dynamic organization.  Loved meeting last year’s winner, Joanna Smith Rakoff. I read her novel, A Fortunate Age, in three feverish  nights of staying up until 2 a.m. and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I continue to recommend it to book clubs whenever I travel.

Mishigas in Midtown

February 3rd, 2011

I had a wonderful time talking about Rich Boy with the young women of the Mishigas book club in Midtown Manhattan. Delicious dinner and lots of great conversation. Thanks for inviting me, ladies, and good luck with your careers and future reading projects! If your book group is thinking of reading Rich Boy and would like me to participate, feel free to email at sharon@sharonpomerantz.com. Even if I can’t always be there in person, I can usually arrange a conference call.

It’s been a while

December 12th, 2010

Hello out there. It’s been a while since I posted anything. Happy holidays to all!

I passed the Hanukkah holiday with a stomach virus, but  got better just time to put in some fun book club visits, including this past week at the Barton Hills Country Club here in Ann Arbor. I met a terrific group of women with great questions (and excellent desserts). They were also collecting books to send overseas to service members. Our troops are often lonely (and bored) this time of year, and far from their families; they can use the diversion of a good story.

This is a time of year for thinking of others. Personally, I give to arts groups because they are always in dire straights during a tough economy. Also, I support food banks and groups like Food Gatherers, a local Ann Arbor organization started by the founders of Zingerman’s. You don’t have to give money–many places are dying for volunteers. I wrote a novel about a character obsessed with wealth–but these days, far too many Americans are just getting from meal to meal.

Rich Boy in Houston

November 5th, 2010

What a wonderful time I had in Houston, first with the UJA-Federation Business and Professional Women’s group, and then at the Houston JCC, where I did a presentation at their Jewish Book and Arts Fair. Houston is a fantastically friendly city, though I had a head start, thanks to the Kosoy family, friends of many years, who live in the area. It all went very quickly (well, I was there for 48 hours), but I did manage to get in some good Tex-Mex.

Somewhere in between all that, I stopped in at the Houston NPR offices of KUHF to talk with Catherine Lu (who has such a soothing voice–no wonder she’s a radio interviewer). Here’s the link: http://app1.kuhf.org/audiolibrary/101104Pomerantz.mp3
